Dictation
Dictation runs in four stages: record, transcribe, correct, insert. The finished text goes into the app and field your cursor was in when recording started.
Ways to start recording
| Entry point | Behavior |
|---|---|
⌃⇧R | Push to Talk by default. Records while held and transcribes on release. |
⌃⇧D | Press once to start and again to stop, whatever the recording mode. |
| Right-click the menu bar icon | Press once to start and again to stop. |
Start Recording in the quick controls | In the window that opens when you left-click the menu bar icon. |
sogon://toggle | Start and stop from another tool. See External tools. |
Choose Push to Talk or Toggle in Settings → General → Recording → Recording Mode. Set the right-click action in Settings → General → General → Right-click the menu bar icon: Start/stop dictation (default), Start/stop meeting recording, or Do nothing.
Where text goes
- Sogon remembers the app and field at the moment recording starts and pastes there.
- Pasting uses the clipboard and
⌘V. Your previous clipboard contents are restored shortly after. - If there's nowhere to paste or pasting fails, the result stays on the clipboard and the Voice Bar says so. Paste it yourself with
⌘V. - To return all the way to a Chrome tab and field or an iTerm2 session (including tmux windows and panes), turn on both switches in Settings → General → Context Restore and grant the Automation permission.
Clicking the menu bar on another display makes macOS bring that display's app forward, and that app becomes the target. To insert into the original app, use the shortcut or click the menu bar on that app's display.
Dictating in a row
You can start a new recording while the previous one is still being corrected. Sogon processes several utterances at once but inserts them in the order you spoke them. Insertion pauses while you record and resumes when you stop.
Canceling
| Method | Notes |
|---|---|
⌃⇧⌫ | The default cancel shortcut. Change it in Settings → General → Recording → Cancel Shortcut. |
| Cancel button on the Voice Bar | Visible only while recording or processing. |
| Quick controls and Settings → Status | Appear only when there is something to cancel. |
Canceling discards the captured audio and the result, and inserts nothing. Stop Recording does the opposite: it transcribes and inserts what was recorded so far. esc does not cancel.
⌃⇧⌫ does nothing when only a meeting session is running, so a single keystroke cannot throw away a long recording. To cancel a meeting session, press cancel in the quick controls or Settings → Status and confirm.
Dictating during a meeting recording
⌃⇧D is a press-to-start, press-to-stop dictation regardless of the recording mode. It also works while a meeting session is running; in that case the text goes only to the cursor and isn't added to the session.
The order matters: start the session first, then add dictation. You can't start a session while dictating. During a session, Stop Recording in the quick controls stops the session, so press ⌃⇧D again to stop only the dictation.
Audio sources
Choose these in Settings → General → Input.
| Setting | Default | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Capture my microphone | On | Records your voice. |
| Capture system audio | Off | Records sound played on your Mac. Needs the Screen Recording permission. |
| Remove playback from mic | On | Reduces speaker sound leaking back into the mic and being transcribed twice. |
| Audio Input Channel | Auto (downmix) | Picks the channel on multichannel audio devices. |
| Transcription Language | Korean | Auto-detect, Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, German, or Portuguese. |
When both sources are recorded, the result is labeled [마이크] (microphone) and [시스템 오디오] (system audio).
Dictation formatting
Turn on Line break on pauses in Settings → General → Dictation Formatting to start a new line where you pause. The pause threshold is 0.6 seconds and adjustable. It works only with the WhisperKit engine.
Voice Bar
The bar at the bottom center of the active display while recording and processing. It does not take keyboard focus, so you can keep typing in the target app.
- Turn off Settings → General → General →
Show recording overlayto hide it. - Choose
Overlay opacityfromOpaque,Medium, andTranslucent. - The eye icon in the quick controls hides it for the current run only. Click the menu bar icon to bring it back.
