Install

Download the DMG and move it into /Applications. No sign-in and no extra tooling are needed.

Before you start

  • Make sure your Mac has Apple Silicon. Sogon doesn't run on Intel Macs.
  • Make sure you are on macOS 14 or later.

Install

  1. Open the latest release in a browser.
  2. Download Sogon.dmg (Apple Silicon, notarized) from the latest release.
  3. If Sogon is running, click the menu bar icon and press Quit (⌘Q) at the bottom of the quick controls.
  4. Open the DMG and drag Sogon.app into the Applications folder.
  5. Launch /Applications/Sogon.app.

Releases are signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple. You don't need to clear the quarantine attribute with xattr or lower your security settings.

Install with Homebrew

If you use Homebrew, it is one line.

brew install --cask ddiiwoong/tap/sogon

The tap is added automatically the first time. It downloads the same notarized file as the DMG install above, verifies its checksum, and puts it in /Applications.

Sogon updates itself (see below), so you do not need brew upgrade. If you would rather upgrade through Homebrew: brew upgrade --cask ddiiwoong/tap/sogon.

Grant permissions on first launch

On first launch macOS asks for permissions. Sogon needs two:

  • Microphone — for recording and dictation.
  • Accessibility — to type text at the cursor. Enable Sogon under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.

How to tell it worked

  • The Sogon icon appears in the menu bar. With default settings it also appears in the Dock.
  • On first launch the tutorial window opens. Continue with First launch and permissions.

If it does not work

SymptomWhat to do
"Sogon.app" cannot be opened warningThe build is notarized. Control-click the app in Finder and choose Open, or press Open Anyway in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
Dictation does not type at the cursorCheck that Sogon is enabled under System Settings → Privacy & Security → Accessibility.
The menu bar icon is not visibleIt may be hidden behind the notch or other menu bar apps. Click the Dock icon to open Settings.

Sogon downloads and installs updates itself. When a newer build exists a window appears; click it and Sogon installs the update and relaunches. Nothing appears when you are up to date. To check right now, click Updates in the menu bar quick controls. A new version also shows up as a one-line notice in the quick controls and in Settings → Status.

You can still download the DMG and replace the app by hand, the same way you installed it.
