External tools

Any tool that can open a sogon:// URL can start and stop dictation. Opening the URL does not change the frontmost app, so the result goes into the app where your cursor is now.

Starting and stopping dictation

open "sogon://toggle" # start / stop
open "sogon://push" # start (ignored if already recording)
open "sogon://release" # stop (ignored if not recording)

Put push and release on two buttons to get Push to Talk. These three commands always work, regardless of settings.

ToolHow to set it up
RaycastCreate a Quicklink with the URL and assign a hotkey.
Stream DeckPut the URL in System: Open.
Keyboard Maestro, ShortcutsUse an open-URL action.

There is no URL to start or end a meeting session, so an external tool can't cut a long recording by accident.

Sending text for correction

open "sogon://text?text=we need validation here"

Sogon corrects the text and puts it on the clipboard. It's never inserted at the cursor. When done, the Voice Bar shows Copied to clipboard for a few seconds; paste with ⌘V.

This works only after you turn on Allow text correction from external tools in Settings → General → External Tools. It's off by default, and Sogon ignores requests while it's off. When on, text from other programs also goes through correction and may be sent to a cloud LLM, overwrites your clipboard, and is added to the dictation history.

Things to watch for:

  • Put Korean in as is, or percent-encode everything. Mixing the two leaves %20 as literal text.
  • Don't use + for spaces. + arrives as a character.
  • Text longer than 1,500 characters is rejected.
  • The caller can't tell when correction finishes. This isn't suited to programs that need the result back.
